Step 1
Let your dog show interest by stepping on or pawing at the towel. Once he does that, allow him to have the treat. Reinforce this behavior by repeating several times until he is consistently pawing at the towel.

Step 2
Lay the Scratch Board on the floor with the towel and treat on top. Allow your dog to paw at it to get the treat. Until he was accustomed to the feeling of the sanding surface on his nails.

Step 3
Once your dog is consistently pawing at the Scratch Board on the floor, incrementally angle the board with the towel and treat.

Step 4
Remove the towel and reward your dog for every scratch at the board.
